When Mithun Chakraborty Played This Kamal Haasan Starrer’s Hindi Remake

Remakes from Southern industries have been flooding Hindi film in recent years, to both positive and negative reviews. But a few decades ago, people viewed Southern remakes more favorably. Umesh Mehra’s Guru, a Hindi film starring Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi, is one such example. The storyline of Guru was taken from the 1985 film Kaakki Sattai, starring Kamal Haasan. In the Rajasekhar-directed original film, Thengai Srinivasan, Sathyaraj, Rajeev, Ambika, and Madhavi also appeared.

Kamal Haasan, well known for his parts in romantic dramas, made a transition into the action genre with Kaakki Sattai. The story of the movie centers on a young guy who, because of his lack of influence, is unable to join the police force. He becomes a local troublemaker after becoming frustrated with corruption, with Ambika playing his encouraging love interest. The film was released at a period when themes of revolt against unemployment and corruption resonated with young people, and it became a huge box office hit, catapulting Kamal Haasan into even greater celebrity.

Taking advantage of the film’s popularity and relevant premise, Umesh Mehra recreated it in Hindi as Guru in 1989. The core narrative was altered, although not entirely; for example, Sridevi’s character now plays two roles. Guru became a big hit at the movie office, mirroring the popularity of its Southern predecessor.

Rumors of Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi’s purported romance surfaced during the film’s production, which increased the amount of exposure. Sridevi reportedly said she wanted to wed Mithun Chakraborty, but he turned her down since he was already married. The popularity of the movie was aided by this promotional aspect. Curiously, fourteen years later, Mithun Chakraborty acted in two films with the same name: Guru (2003), a Bengali film, and Guru (2007), a Hindi film starring Abhishek Bachchan in the main role.
